Human are the agents of transformation in forest landscapes through their values related to nature, practices and knowledge. They play a vital role in shaping sustainable futures for forests and the communities that depend on them. Our research is helping to:
- Demonstrate the crucial social role of fire for traditional and local communities
- Show potential solutions to towards higher income and environmentally friendly land uses
- Guide ways in which sustainable use reserves can be supported in reducing the risk of mega-forest fires in the face of climate change.
Working alongside local communities, reserve managers, among other key actors, we aim to advance in the co-design of fair and just solutions to the current amazonian social-environmental crisis. We believe ongoing multi-stakeholder dialogues and co-developed ecological and social research can support novel approaches to solve these problems. In our work, we also explore the burden of climate change on local communities, their practices and livelihoods, as well as possible adaptative solutions to increase their socioeconomic resilience.
